Why Claire Can’t Walk Away from a Mystery

One of the questions I’ve been thinking about while planning Secrets and Scones is a simple one.

Why does Claire keep getting involved?

After all, she’s not a police officer.

She’s not a private investigator.

She owns a bakery.

Most people would probably stay as far away from a murder investigation as possible.

Claire never seems to have that option.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized the answer has very little to do with the mystery itself.

It has everything to do with her father.

Long before Claire opened the doors to Claire’s Curious Confections, she spent years watching James Anderson work.

James wasn’t just a detective.

He was a student of people.

He taught Claire that the smallest details often matter the most. To slow down. To observe. To notice when something didn’t quite fit. He loved puzzles of every kind, and he had a habit of turning almost everything into one. Whether it was a crossword at the breakfast table or an unsolved case at work, James believed every mystery had an answer if you were patient enough to keep looking.

Claire didn’t realize it at the time, but she was learning right alongside him.

She learned that asking questions isn’t being nosy.

It’s being curious.

She learned that listening is often more powerful than talking.

She learned that people usually tell you who they are…

If you’re paying attention.

Those lessons stayed with her long after she left home.

Even now, standing behind the bakery counter, Claire can’t ignore the little things that don’t make sense. A conversation that ends too quickly. A story that changes ever so slightly. A look between two people that says more than words ever could.

She’s wired to notice.

And once she notices something…

She can’t simply pretend it isn’t there.

That’s one of the reasons Secrets and Scones has become such a meaningful story for me.

This isn’t just another mystery for Claire to solve.

For the first time, she’s following in her father’s footsteps in the most personal way possible.

When a human bone is discovered during a family tubing trip, the investigation seems like another tragedy from the past.

Then Claire discovers a letter James left behind.

Suddenly, the mystery isn’t just about identifying a victim.

It’s about finishing the investigation her father never had the chance to complete.

In many ways, Claire has been preparing for this case her entire life.

She just didn’t know it.

And I think James would be proud of the detective his daughter quietly became.
