Every mystery needs a setting.
But the best mysteries give readers a place they never want to leave.
When I first imagined the Willow Creek Mystery series, I knew I wanted the town to be more than a backdrop for a murder investigation. I wanted it to feel like a place where you could spend an afternoon walking down Main Street, stop for coffee, browse a local shop, and wave to familiar faces along the way.
In other words, I wanted Willow Creek to feel like home.
That’s one of the reasons Claire Anderson isn’t a detective.
She’s a bakery owner.
Claire’s Curious Confections isn’t just where cupcakes are baked and coffee is poured. It’s where birthdays are celebrated, neighbors catch up on the latest town gossip, and friends gather after a long day. It’s the kind of place where everyone eventually walks through the front door.
And because everyone comes through the bakery…
Claire hears everything.
Of course, Willow Creek wouldn’t be Willow Creek without the people who call it home.
Jordan is Claire’s steady rock, always willing to help no matter how complicated life becomes.
Emily keeps the bakery running with humor, loyalty, and enough energy to brighten even the busiest mornings.
Sheriff Pete Croft and Deputy Hannah Foster are constantly trying to keep the peace while Claire somehow manages to stumble into yet another investigation.
Martin, the town archivist, has an incredible memory for Willow Creek’s history and an uncanny ability to uncover information everyone else has forgotten.
And then there’s Lily.
Every cozy mystery needs at least one character capable of stealing every scene without saying a single word.
Lily happily fills that role.
She’s loyal, endlessly curious, and has a remarkable talent for finding exactly what Claire wasn’t looking for.
As I’ve continued writing this series, I’ve realized something important.
Readers don’t return to Willow Creek just to solve another mystery.
They come back to visit the people.
That’s exactly how I feel while writing.
Every time I begin outlining a new book, it feels less like creating a new town and more like returning to visit old friends.
Nowhere is that more true than with Secrets and Scones.
This time, Willow Creek itself becomes part of the mystery. A peaceful afternoon on the river leads to the discovery of human remains, awakening a decades-old case that reaches back into the town’s history. What begins as another investigation soon becomes deeply personal for Claire when she discovers a letter left behind by her father, James Anderson, pointing toward the last mystery he never had the chance to solve.
The story isn’t just about uncovering the truth.
It’s about uncovering another layer of Willow Creek itself.
Every new mystery reveals another piece of the town’s history.
Another forgotten relationship.
Another hidden secret.
Another reason the people who live there are who they are today.
That’s what I hope readers discover as this series continues.
Not just great mysteries.
A place that feels familiar.
A community worth returning to.
Because long after the mystery is solved and the final page is turned, I hope Willow Creek still feels like home.
And if I’ve done my job well…
You’ll already be looking forward to your next visit.
